The Pontiff says that nuclear deterrence and the threats of mutual destruction cannot be the basis for coexistence and fraternity among countries and peoples.

Tuesday Pope Francis has called on world leaders, activists and people to pull together to rid the world of the threat of nuclear weapons.

“The nuclear weapons are an issue affecting all nations with negative consequences for future generations and the planet,” the Pope said. The Pope’s comments were made in a statement read by the Vatican’s permanent representative to UN agencies in Geneva, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, at the opening of the Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons.
