While many religious leaders might condemn 29-year-old Brittany Maynard’s decision to end her own life under Oregon’s Death With Dignity Act, the bishop of the Evangelical Catholic Diocese of the Northwest is “spiritually and personally sure” she was “received into God’s loving hands.”

Maynard was diagnosed with a highly aggressive form of brain cancer earlier this year. According to nonprofit Compassion & Choices, she moved to the Portland area this summer to take advantage or Oregon’s Death with Dignity law.

She spent the last month of her life partnering with the nonprofit to advocate for the expansion of legal physician-assisted suicide.

“Ms. Maynard wished to experience all possible quality of life days before the ravages of her brain cancer would engulf her into pain and torment,” Bishop James Wilkowski said in a statement released Monday.
