Wyoming Governor: GOP Contenders Hold Commanding Leads

Rasmussen Reports

All four Republican hopefuls hold solid leads over the top two Democratic challengers in the race to be Wyoming’s next governor.

A new Rasmussen Reports survey of Likely Voters in the state finds that not one Republican candidate earns less than 44% support.  Meanwhile, neither ex-state Democratic chairwoman Leslie Peterson or Laramie Mayor Pete Gosar picks up more than 28% of the vote.

In early April, support for each of the GOP candidates ranged from 41% to 45%.

State Auditor Rita Meyer has 51% support to Peterson’s 23% and leads Gosar 52% to 23%. U.S. Attorney Matt Mead holds a 49% to 22% lead over Peterson and a 51% to 23% lead over Gosar.

If former state legislator Ron Micheli is the GOP candidate in the race, he leads Peterson 47% to 27% and Gosar 46% to 28%. State House Speaker Colin Simpson bests Peterson by a 44% to 28% margin and Gosar 51% to 24%.

In each match-up, between 11% and 14% favor some other candidate, while anywhere from 12% and 15% are undecided.

Republicans will select their candidate in a primary held on August 17.

The survey of 500 Likely Voters in Wyoming was conducted on June 22, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/-4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Term-limited Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, announced early in March that he would not be pursuing a third term. For the previous year, there had been persistent speculation that the popular governor might challenge the constitutionality of the term limits law, and the waiting game made it difficult for other prospective Democratic contenders to gear up for a campaign.
