South Dakota Governor: Daugaard (R) Still Ahead of Heidepriem (D)

Republican Dennis Daugaard continues to sit comfortably ahead of Democrat Scott Heidepriem in the South Dakota gubernatorial race.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds Daugaard earning support from 57% of the state’s Likely Voters, while Heidepriem picks up 33% of the vote.  Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Last month, Daugaard led his Democratic challenger 57% to 28%.  In surveys dating back to March, Daugaard has consistently held a double-digit lead over Heidepriem, with support ranging from 49% to 59%.  In those same surveys, Heidepriem has earned anywhere from 27% to 36% of the vote.

Eighty-five percent (85%) of Republicans favor Daugaard, the current lieutenant governor, while just 66% of Democrats support Heidepriem.  Among voters not affiliated with either political party, the Republican holds a 20-point advantage over the Democrat.

Republican Kristi Noem has edged back into the lead over incumbent Democrat Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin in South Dakota’s U.S. House race.

This statewide telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters in South Dakota was conducted on October 4, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Twenty-one percent (21%) of voters in the state consider themselves members of the Tea Party movement, higher than the level measured nationally.  Two-out-of-three voters (66%), however, do not consider themselves members of that movement.

Seventy-six percent (76%) of Tea Partiers in South Dakota favor Daugaard, while non-Tea Party members are evenly divided over which candidate they support.
