S-300 missile deal put on hold; Erdogan calls sanctions a “mistake.”

ussia will put an arms deal it had been working on with Iran on hold in response to the new round of UN sanctions that were placed on Iran Wednesday, reported Russian news agency Interfax.

The deal, which had the Russians selling Iran the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system, was put on hold despite the fact that Russian officials previously had said that sanctions would not prevent them from completing the deal.

The sanctions against Iran for enriching uranium were passed Wednesday by the UN Security Council.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the sanctions on Iran a “mistake”, reported Reuters.

Erdogan, in a speech to a Arab and Turkish ministerial forum, added that Turkey will continue to look for a solution to help remove concerns over Iran’s nuclear program along with Brazil.

Turkey and Brazil were the only states among the Security Council’s 15 members to vote against the sanctions.

Erdogan expressed concern at the danger of pushing Iran into a corner, stating, “Isolation is not the solution to Iran’s problems.”
